Kandal has its territory around but not including Phnom Penh. The province is bounded to the north by Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Cham Provinces, to the east by Prey Veng, to the south by Vietnam, to the west by Takeo and Kampong Speu provinces. The provincial capital is Ta Khmau, 11km south of Phnom Penh.

Kandal doesn't have major tourist attractions as in other provinces in Cambodia, but some are worth a day trip from Phnom Penh if you have the time. Udong is a small town, 40km north-west of Phnom Penh along NH5. The town was the capital of Cambodia from 1618 to 1866, and was successively destroyed by the Thais, the American bombardments and the Khmer Rouge. At Udong, you can visit the nearby Phnom Udong with many stupas on it and which is considered a sacred place by the Khmer people. Phnom Udong has a great view of the peaceful surrounding countryside.

Kandal Province has a water border-crossing with Vietnam at Kaam Samnor – Vinh Xuong (An Giang Province, Vietnam). There are daily speedboat service between Phnom Penh and Chau Doc (Vietnam) via  this border-crossing.
