Overview

PREAH VIHEAR PROVINCE

Preah Vihear Province is bordered to the north by Laos and Thailand, to the east by Strung Treng, to the south by Kompong Thom and to the east by Siem Reap and Oddar Meanchey. The province is heavily forested and there's virtually no decent road in existence. By far the province only receives the hardcore adventure travellers who is desperate for challenges and the illegal loggers who come for the precious tropical hardwoods.

Still once the infrastructure starts to get better (and it's getting better to facilitate the logging), Preah Vihear is among the top destinations in Cambodia for the travellers thanks to the huge areas of pristine forests, the commanding hilltop temple of Prasat Preah Vihear, the capital of Koh Ker and the Preah Khan Temple. Preah Vihear is very potential for econ tourism. But if you plan to visit the province now, be aware that the province is among the most heavily mined areas in Cambodia and under no circumstances should you stray from the well-trodden paths.

The provincial capital of Preah Vihear Province is Tbeng Meanchey which is virtually a village. The town is the base for exploring the Khmer legacies in the areas. Tbeng Meanchey is 140 km from Kampong Thom, 280km from Siem Reap.
