THE LA CHI

Population: 10,765 people (as of 1999)
Locality: Ha Giang, Lao Cai Provinces.
Customs and culture
The La Chi live in houses on-stilts. Their house is composed of 03 rooms, the biggest one is where the ancestor altar is placed. Every family has their own drums and gongs which are used for family rites.
The children take the family name from the father.
At weddings, the groom is supposed to pay the bride's family an amount of money for having brought her up.
The 7th lunar month Festival is important and a big occasion among the La Chi.
Language: The La Chi language belongs to the Kadai Group, a sub-group of Thai-Kadai linguistic Family.
Dress
Men wear shirts, wide trousers, and head turbans. The women wear a dress with a belt, a bra, and a long turban, along with a pair of trousers or a skirt.
Economy
The La Chi grow wet rice on terraces. The La Chi women weave cloths and use indigo for dyeing.
