THE SAN DIU
Derivatives: San Deo, Trai, Trai Dat, and "Man Quan Coc" (Man in Shorts)
Population: 126,237 people (as of 1999).
Locality: The San Diu live in the areas of Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Vinh Phu, Bac Thai, and Tuyen Quang Provinces.
Customs and culture:
The San Diu houses are directly on the ground.
The San Diu is patriarchal: The husband (father) is the chief of the family. The children take the family name of the father and only sons can inherit family properties.
The parents decide when their children should marry.
The San Diu worship their ancestors and the God of Kitchen. They hold many annual ceremonies usually before and after the crops for coming bumper crops.
The San Diu language belongs to the Han or Sino-Tibetan Group
Dress:
The San Diu ladies are to have a long black dress. They tend to wear leg-dress which is composed of a white sheet of white cloth wrapping around the legs.
Economy:
The San Diu live on wet-rice agriculture.
