THE SI LA

Population: 840 people ( as of 1999)
Locality: Lai Chau Province.

Customs and culture:
The Si La live in houses on-the-ground. The kitchen is usually built at the centre of the house.

Relationships between the members of a lineage are very close. The chief of a lineage is to make decisions on all important family affairs.
The Si La worship their ancestors and the spirits of the village.

The Si La language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan group.

Dress: The attire of women is decorated with silver and tin coins in the front.

Economy: The Si La cultivate rice, corn and practise hunting.
