Bird Watching Tour at Cat Tien National Park Overview

Cat Tien National Park (or Nam Cat Tien National Park) possesses an incredible persity of bird species and mammal species living in the forest and wetland habitats of the park. It is estimated that Cat Tien has 351 species of birds. Endangered birds to be found here include White-winged Duck, White-shouldered Ibis, Germains Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl and the very elusive Orange-necked Partridge.

Mammal species found in the park include Indochinese Tiger, Asian Elephant and the last surviving Annamese Rhino, a sub species of the Javan Rhinoes, although it is not easy to catch a glimpse of these. Wild boars, several species of deers and the rare Duoc Langurs and Crested Gibbons are sometimes seen.

The birding sites can vary from time to time, depending on the weather conditions and the level of physical exertion our travellers are ready for. Some sites may require hours of hard trekking through dense forests. At different sites, it is expected that we can observe different species of birds.

Accommodation is at the park guest house which has basic facilities. Food included on the tour is served at the park restaurant or as takeaway food.

Apart from great birding experiences, you will have a relaxing time surrounded by the peaceful and fresh nature of Cat Tien National Park. The best times to observe the birds are normally in early morning or late afternoon. The best time to do the trip is from December to early April. The rainy season may come in early April or early May depending on each year.

Detailed itinerary

Day1 Arrive at Saigon/Saigon – Cat Tien National Park (D)

Breakfast at the hotel
Arriving at Saigon Tan Son Nhat Airport, welcomed by our driver and transferred to Cat Tien National Park. The road journey is mostly uphill passing through large areas of rubber plantations to the national park.

Arriving at the park, cross the ferry and proceed to the park headquarters. Free time for bird-watching along the path from the park headquarters.
Dinner at the park.
Overnight in Nam Cat Tien.

Day2 Cat Tien National Park Full Day Bird Watching (specialist tour guide included) (B/L/D)

Breakfast at the guest house.
A full day of bird-watching assisted with a park specialist birding tour guide. We start early and travel by jeep to the direction of the Crocodile Lake. Species that can be seen here include Green Peafowl by Crocodile Lake in early morning or late afternoon, Bronze-winged Jacana, Lesser Adjutant and Purple Heron.

In the afternoon, travel by jeep to the Elephant Hill for more bird-watching. You may want to look out for Red, Black and Banded Broadbill, Orange-breasted Trogon and Pale-headed Woodpecker amongst others.
Lunch and dinner at the park.
Overnight in Nam Cat Tien.

Day3 Cat Tien National Park Full Day Bird Watching (specialist tour guide included) (B/L/D)

We travel by jeep in the direction of Dak Lua for the morning bird-watching. In the area you can adore the visiting waders, Green Peafowl.

Day4 Cat Tien National Park - Saigon (without guide for road transfer)/Depart Saigon (B)

Free time for birding along the headquarters road where Green-eared, Blue-eared and Lineated Barbet can often be seen perched high up in road-side trees. Then, cross the ferry and meet our driver for the road transfer back to Saigon Tan Son Nhat Airport for your departure.
