Stung Treng is located to the north-east of Cambodia. The province shares the border with Laos to the north, with Ratanakiri Province to the east, with Mondulkiri and Kratie to the south, with Preah Vihear and Kompong Thom to the west.

There is an international border-crossing between Cambodia and Laos at Dong Kralor. There is not much for the travellers to do in Stung Treng, it is only a transit stop for those who travel to/from Ratanakiri Province and to/from southern Laos. For those who have a night at Stung Treng, then a river boat trip to watch the fresh water dolphins which inhabit in the Mekong River between Stung Treng and Kratie.

Stung Treng Town is the provincial capital, 50km south  of the Lao border, 146km south-west of Ban Lung (5 hours during the rainy season and 4 hours in the dry season by road), 142km north of Kratie (via National Road No. 7), and 348 km north-east of Phnom Penh.

Bullet boats travel for 4.5 hours from Stung Treng to Kratie in the rainy season and the return boat trip is 6-7 hours. In the dry season, the water is not deep enough and the river becomes dangerous with sand bars; there are slow boats only.

There are no luxury hotels and resorts in Stung Treng, most are with basic facilities. There are some small hotels located on the riverside with idyllic settings.
