August is autumn in the North of Vietnam, is transitional time between the hot and dry season and rainy season in the Central Coast, the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
In August the far-northern mountains often have torrential rains which often cause flash floods. There may also be typhoons or tropical depressions brushing through Vietnam’s sea or inland in the North and north of the Central Region of Vietnam. Typhoons often cause floods in the affected regions.
While the extreme Northwest of Vietnam (Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau) enjoys pleasant temperatures (<34oC), the rest of northern Vietnam may have days with high temperatures of 35-37oC depending on each year.
The Central Coast of Vietnam may still have hot days with temperatures reaching 36-38oC but rains are found more often which helps to bring the temperatures down to more tolerable levels.
In August, the Southwesterly Monsoon is often strong meaning rough sea from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau and from Ca Mau to the Rach Gia Gulf, and considerable rainfalls in South Vietnam (including the offshore islands) and the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

1/North Vietnam
The North of Vietnam experienced extreme weather in August 2019. There were 02 tropical depressions/typhoons hitting North Vietnam in August 2019: Typhoon Waphi lasted from the end of July through the beginning of August and Typhoon Podul at the end of August. Both caused torrential rains in the North and part of the north of the Central Coast (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An).
There was a brief heat strike in parts of the Northeast of Vietnam, the Northwest (Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai) and the lowlands of northern Vietnam.
- The Northeast of Vietnam (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Ba Be National Park…) had sun, clouds, thunderstorms and some torrential rains. The region had temperatures between 24-34oC mostly, 26-36oC for the second and third weeks.
Dong Van Karst Plateau was had sun, clouds, thunderstorms and some torrential rains. The temperatures were 19-27oC.
- The eastern Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai) suffered from a heat strike for the last three weeks of the month with temperatures from 28-36C. Torrential rains were found on some days in the region, too.
Sapa had most days of August with clouds and rains, some sun, 18-25oC.
Mu Cang Chai had some sun, mostly clouds and thunderstorms. The temperatures were mostly 19-27oC.
Mai Chau had sun, clouds, rains, 26-36oC in the second and third weeks, 24-33oC during the rest of the month.
- The extreme North West of Vietnam (Son La, Lai Chau and Dien Bien) clouds and torrential rains mostly, some sun, 22-31oC mostly, 24-33oC in Lai Chau.
The Moc Chau Plateau enjoyed sun, clouds and rains, pleasant temperatures of 19-27oC mostly.
- The low lands in northern Vietnam (Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh) had sun, clouds and rains, some torrential rains. The temperatures were 25-31oC in Halong Bay and Hai Phong and 26-34oC in the others. It was warm in the second week in the Red River Delta, 27-37oC.
2/The North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh)
The region suffered from torrential rains in the first week and last week of the month, a heat trike in the second and third week. There were floods in Thanh Hoa (Quan Son, Muong Lat) which caused much damage in the first week. The temperatures were 28-37oC during the heat strike, 26-33oC for the rest of the month.
3/ The Central Coast of Vietnam (Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan)
The weather pattern took a turn for the better: nicer temperatures in the first and last week. It was still hot during the second and third week.
- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue had mostly sunny and hot days, 26-34oC and 27-37oC during the heat strike.
- Da Nang, Hoi An and the provinces to the south of the Hai Van Pass (Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen) had sunny days with hot temperatures, 28-37oC during the second and third week. There were isolated rains for the rest of the month, 27-35oC.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: It was mostly sunny days with scattered thunderstorms and rains. It was mostly fine temperatures, 25-34oC in Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan, 25-31oC in Binh Thuan. The temperatures were high in Ninh Thuan in the second and third weeks, 26-36oC.
4/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong)
The Central Highlands had a bad rainy time in August 2019: cloudy days with daily rains and more torrential rains. There were bad floods in the Central Highlands in the first and second weeks of August 2019. The temperatures were pleasant, 21-30oC mostly, 21-27oC in Pleiku.
Da Lat had a rainy August in 2019 with clouds and rains, bad floods in the first and second weeks, 17-24oC mostly, 17-21oC in the first week.
5/The South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and the Mekong Delta)
The South of Vietnam had an August in 2019 with daily rains as usual and pleasant temperatures. The Southwesterly Monsoon was strong for most of the month and the sea was mostly rough. There were violent waves in Ca Mau and Kien Giang which caused quite some damage to local inhabitants and the coastline. There were torrential rains and floods in parts of Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc, the Phu Quoc Island.
- Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta had mostly clouds, rains, 25-32oC mostly, 27-31oC in Vung Tau.
- Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc: clouds, rains, 25-32oC.
- Con Dao Islands had clouds, rains, strong southwesterly wind, rough sea, 27-29oC;
- Phu Quoc Island had torrential rains, rough sea, strong southwesterly wind, devastating floods in the first half of the month, 26-31oC.
