Travel Guide to Nom Village, Hung Yen

The villagers used to specialize in recycling bronze and making bronze wares; only a couple of families keep on with the traditional occupation nowadays. But the village preserves the ancient architectures and atmosphere of the bygone times. Visiting Nom Village, you’ll be back in time to experience a typical village in northern Vietnam in the old days.

Rice fields around Nom Village

Like other villages in Vietnam, Nom Village is surrounded by vast rice fields. The lovely road through the breathtaking rice fields leads us to the village. Once you get through the front gate, you’ll be in a different world…

Nom Village has a nice layout: a series of ponds in the middle stretching from the south-east to the north-west; on either side of the ponds are familial worshiping houses; behind the worshiping houses are residential houses. There are 2 entrances to the village: front one to the south-east and the back one to the north-west. The front gate was built nearly 200 years ago and the back one was added recently.

Passing through the front gate, you’ll stroll on the waterfront paths and take in the lovely peacefulness of the country life: The weathered gate, the clear water mirroring the old houses which line the waterfront, the areca palm trees, the white conical hats, the old ladies chewing betel enjoying a casual chat… For those growing up in Vietnam, those scenes easily conjure up images of the country some long time ago… For foreign visitors, you’ll find another Vietnam apart from bustling cities that you have been to. For photographers, you’ll be carried back in time and be absorbed in the quaint atmosphere, the charming old houses and tiny alleys, the wrinkled old visages…

Once you come to the other end of the road, the village community house awaits you. There is a 100-year-old banyan tree in the front and two ponds on either sides filled with water lily flowers. The thick foliage and hanging roots of the giant tree covers almost the entire front yard which makes it more of an sacred atmosphere.

The community house is dedicated to the village’s saint and is where the villagers have gatherings on important occasions such as making collective decisions, village festivals... Every day, kids and elderly people have fun time around the village community. For many Vietnamese, the image of the community house is what they miss most while living far away from their home.

There are several tiny alleys from the waterfront paths leading to the houses in the rear side of the worshiping houses. These houses are where villagers live. If you are observant enough, then there are certainly lots of interesting things of local life for you to see. It is quite amazing that Vietnam is advancing fast and villages turn into towns or small cities and here, among just a few places in the country, lifestyle remains unchanged… Come to Nom Village, you’ll be in a different Vietnam.

Now you’ve explored the village thoroughly, it is time to come back to the front gate and discover more. We’ll visit the village market which is similar to any country villages in Vietnam… several years ago; they are not easily found nowadays though. You’ll cross a stone bridge spanning the banks of the Nguyet Duc River to the northern side where the market is located. The market gathering is only in the morning and it is a lovely scene. There is a wide array of goods, heaps of activities and smells, and occupations of which many are vanishing…
