Overview

KAMPONG THOM

Kampong Thom Province is the second largest province of Cambodia. Kampong Thom is bordered to the southwest by the Tonle Sap River, to the west by Siem Reap, to the north by Preah Vihear and to the east by the Mekong River. Kompong Thom is the transit point for the travellers between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and the gateway for the adventure travellers to explore the more remote destinations in the north and north east of Cambodia. Farming and fishing brings the most income to the local economy, especially Kampong Thom is the biggest cash-nut producing area of Cambodia.

Kampong Thom was the economic and political center of Chenla Kingdom in the early 7th century. The area is still home to the over 100 temples which are oldest structures in Cambodia and they are scattered in the forests of the province. Visiting the temples in Kampong Thom, you'll find the continuity of Khmer architectural development and you'll understand more about the history as well as the culture of Cambodia.

Kampong Thom Town is the capital of Kampong Thom Province and it's located right on High Way 6 connecting Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The town is small and modestly mirror itself on the bank of the Stung Saen River. Kampong Thom is a convenient base for exploring different temples of Kampong Thom Province.

Kampong Thom is 165 km from Phnom Penh and 151 km from Siem Reap.
