THE TAY
Derivatives: Tho, Ngan, Phen, Thu Lao, and Pa Di
Population: 1,477,514 people (as of 1999).
Locality: The Tay live along valleys and lower mountain slopes in Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang Provinces.
Customs and culture
The Tay worship their ancestor and at a family the most revered place is the ancestor altar.
The Tay lives in villages composed of 20 households each.
Language: The Tay language belongs to Tay-Thai Group.
Dress: Tay women wear knee-long black dresses which just fits in with the body. The tradtional attire makes the Tay lady charming.
Economy:
The Tay practise wet rice agriculture from very early. The Tay used to grow a lot of sticky rice in the past. Nowadays they tend to have regular rice.
