Da Lat and the Lang Biang Plateau is a rich endemic bird area of Vietnam with quite a number of endemic bird species: Vietnamese Greenfinch, Dalat Shrike-Babbler, Gray-crowned Crocias, Vietnamese Cutia, Lang Biang Tit, Red Crossbill... to name a few.

The Cuc Phuong National Park covers an area of 22,000ha in Ninh Binh Province, in northern Vietnam. The national park is a system of tropical rain forest on limestone mountains with alternated valleys,... Cuc Phuong is home to the endemic Delacour's Langur which is only found in Ninh Binh Province and which is a critically endangered primate species.

Cat Tien National Park (also known as Nam Cat Tien National Park) is among the best spots in Vietnam for birding. The national park attracts a large number of bird watchers in the dry season from November through May.

On this return train trip, I traveled from Bien Hoa Train Station (Ga Bien Hoa) to Hanoi (Ga Ha Noi). I boarded the train at Bien Hoa when it was blazing hot. When the train was leaving the station, it started pouring down: I had been sipping my tea gazing at the rain through the train window.

The area around Da Lat in the Central Highlands of Vietnam is dubbed as an Endemic Bird Area (EBA) with several endemic bird species. A good chunk of my younger life was attached to train travel: those heading to the far north and the Reunification Express Train connecting the full length between Hanoi and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). The sound, the smells, the vibe... found on the trains and at train stations had become so familiar to me. Then most of my travel was by air and by road, the trains were temporarily forgotten...

The first part of the journey includes photos taken from the train window of the landscape from Hanoi to Da Nang and some of Quang Nam Province. Lots of photos of rice paddies in the Red River Delta in Ha Nam, Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh Provinces at dusk of the first day.
