Chua Doi, or Wat Mahatup is a Khmer-styled Pagoda built around the 16th century, 4km from of Soc Trang City. The pagoda is home to huge century-old trees and about one million bats each of which is about 1kg in weight and with wing-span of 1m to 1.5m. The bats leave the pagoda at night to look for food and come back early next day. The bats at Chua Doi don't eat fruits within the pagoda's area.

Henri Darré (2011-09-03 02:47:01) Je connais particulièrement bien cette pagode, pour avoir combattu le Vietminh à SocTrang, en 1948/49... Je l'ai revue plusieurs fois depuis, au cours de mes voayages. En 1996, un incendie a ravagé cette pagode laquelle, a été remise en état par les bonzes attachés à l'établissement, avec l'aide de généreux donateurs de la région....Le Bouddah qui siège à l'intérieur a été brûlé à 60% et, est resté en l'état.. Pour moi, SocTrang est important puisque j'ai failli y laisser ma vie...mes camarades du 2ème B.M.E.O. n'ont pas eu la même chance que moi.... Je suis sorti pratiquement seul de cette aventure....
