Khai Dinh Tomb Hue
Khai Dinh Tomb is 10km from Hue City and is among the most interesting tomb of the Nguyen Kings. The construction of Khai Dinh Tomb was started on 4th September, 1920 and works were done only after 11 years. Khai Dinh was the last king of the Nguyen Dynasty to build a tomb for himself.
Khai Dinh ruled Vietnam when the country was a French colony. The Vietnamese King was only a puppet controlled by the French colonialists. During the time, Vietnam started having lots of foreign influence into the country's culture and architecture.
Materials for the tomb were mostly imported from overseas: cement from France, ceramics and pieces of glass from China and Japan...The architecture of Khai Dinh Tomb was blend of Roman style, Gothic style, Hindu style, Buddhist style...Having bit of everything seems something in the characters of King Khai Dinh who seemed to adore every foreign things he encountered in his life. Though the original ideas by the King were a bit chaotic, works are carried out by talented local artists, that's why visiting the tomb nowadays, we can still find some real pieces of arts in the decoration of the tomb.
