Tu Duc Tomb was built from 1864 to 1867. The king selected the site and designed the whole complex himself. The tomb was finished when Tu Duc was still in reign and the king would often have retreats from Hue Royal Citadel to live and work from his going-to-be tomb. 

Tu Duc was more like a poet and the tomb architecture shows a lot about his characters. The whole area is like a scenic park which has lakes, hills, pine forests, pavilion for composing and reciting poems...

Tu Duc Tomb is 7km from Hue Royal Citadel and can be visited in 2-3 hours by car, by bus or by bike.
