The countryside in Thai Nguyen Province

Thai Nguyen

Thai Nguyen Province was the capital of the liberated zone of Viet Bac in the resistance war against the French in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The province shares the border with Bac Kan Province to the north, with Lang Son and Bac Giang Provinces to the east; with Hanoi to the south and the provinces of Vinh Phuc and Tuyen Quang to the west. The capital city of the province is Thai Nguyen City, 67km from Hanoi.

The area of Thai Nguyen is hilly connecting the mountainous region of North-East of Vietnam and the Red River Delta and Hanoi. The city is a big industrial center in northern Vietnam during and after the war. The province is famous for green tea, of which the plantations are found in northern area of the province.

There are a number of ethnic groups who stay in scenic countryside of Thai Nguyen, providing plenty of opportunities for easy trekking and leisurely cycling. The capital city is more of an industrial one with lots of business activities. The Ethnology Museum in the city center makes it a nice break on the long journey from Hanoi to the north-eastern provinces of Vietnam.

By far, there's virtually no professional service catering to the travel business and tourism in Thai Nguyen. There are a few big hotels in the city for mostly Vietnamese business travellers and there are a few tourist attractions including the historical relics of Tin Keo, the scenic Nui Coc Lake... visited by Vietnamese tourists only.
