The Mekong River flows into southern Vietnam via two big branches: The Tien River (Upper Mekong) and the Hau River (Lower Mekong, Bassac). These two branches flow from the northwest to the southeast discharging its water into the East Vietnam Sea. Vinh Long Province is bounded by these two river branches.

The brick kiln site stretches for 30km on the side of the Co Chien, Mang Thit, Cai Nhum Rivers and Thay Cai Canal covering Vinh Long City, Long Ho and Mang Thit Districts of Vinh Long Province. You can spend the whole day here from early dawn to dark to get amazing photos of this place and to learn about the different techniques to make pottery and different phases of the process to make bricks.

Making bricks and pottery was for once a thriving business but it suffers from environmental regulations and fierce competitions nowadays. Several old brick kilns have been demolished and many more might have been if the local authority had not interfered. Yes, they wanted to save some amazing contemporary relics because they are so unique and so beautiful. And about 1,500 brick kilns with a history of about 100 years have been saved from destruction.

Things to do

You can visit the site on foot or by boat. From the boat, you can have amazing photos of the brick kilns lining the riverside which look more like ancient temples than contemporary structures. On the other hand, visiting the village on foot you will have close communion with the villagers and workers and learn about their life as well as having close-up photos of the products and of people at work.

How to get there

The site of the brick kilns of Mang Thit is 8km from Vinh Long City by waterway on the Co Chien River. You can get there by car or by boat.
