Phu Tho has hilly terrains to the northern area of the province and some flat plains in the Red River Delta.

The province has a tropical monsoon climate with 4 seasons per year. The annual rainfall in the area is 1,600mm-1,800mm and the average humidity is 85-87%.

Phu Tho Province is not a well-known to most foreign travellers to Vietnam, though there are some attractions in the province that may well be worthwhile to visit for the off-the-beaten path travellers. Viet Tri City was the area of Phong Chau, the capital city of the ancient Van Lang Kingdom, the first Vietnamese-identity kingdom in history, which dates back to 2,879B.C. At Viet Tri, you can still visit the complex of temples dedicated to Hung Kings, the founder kings of Vietnam.

Further to the west of Phu Tho, near Son La Province and at the foot of the Hoang Lien Mountain Range (stretching from Lao Cai Province to Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Son La and Phu Tho Provinces), there's a system of primeval forest on karst mountains of Xuan Son National Park which is home to diverse floral and fauna systems. The national park of Xuan Son is 80km from Viet Tri City and 120km from Hanoi.
