D1 Hill (Dominique 2) belonged to the Dominique Group protecting the French Hedgehog at Dien Bien Phu from the northeast. Dominique 2 was the highest of the hills protecting the eastern flank of the French Hedehog at Dien Bien Phu.

Dominique 2 was 1.6km from the French Commander Post (1.1km via a beeline) and the superior height of the hill (over 70m) allowed commanding views of all neighboring hills as well as French strongpoints in the Central Zone.

In 2004, a Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument with a bronze structure of 220 tons was built on top of Dominique 2. From here, one can have panoramic views of the whole Dien Bien Phu City.
