Hoa Lu District of Ninh Binh Province was the capital city of Dai Co Viet (the name of Vietnam in the 10th century A.D), where the Dinh and the early Le Dynasties successively ruled the kingdom from.  In 1010, the capital city was moved to Hanoi and King Ly Thai To changed the name of Hoa Lu to Trang An District. The name Trang An from that time had been associated with Hoa Lu as the ancient capital city.

In early 2000,  the much-hidden area of over two thousand hectares of land in the south of Hoa Lu District was started being revealed to the public and was quickly turned into a popular tourist attraction. The name of Trang An has been used to refer to this stunning landscape since then.

Trang An includes ranges of towering limestone mountains, dry caves, under water caves, flooded primeval forests, rivers and a very diverse ecosystem. The mountains of Trang An crisscross the area creating 31 'secret' valleys many of which are flooded. The rivers run through the mountains forming spectacular under water caves. There are some patches of forests on limestone mountains and some in flooded valleys. Trang An is home to 310 species of plants, 30 species of animals and 50 species of birds.

Trang An is visited by rowing boat and a complete trip takes 3 hours. During the journey through Trang An, you will travel through 12 caves and 3 temples and the scenery of the nature of Trang An is just unreal.

 To get to Trang An, you can go via the Dinh and Le Temples at Hoa Lu and follow the road for 2km further to Trang An. Alternatively, you can go from the center of Ninh Binh City and follow the newly-made road for 6km to the site.
