Quang Ninh

Quang Ninh Province of Vietnam is located in the North-East of the country. Quang Ninh is bordered to the north by China, to the east and south-east by the East Vietnam Sea, to the south by Hai Phong, to the south-west by Hai Duong Province and to the west by Bac Giang and Lang Son Provinces. The province possesses a rugged coastline of 250km.

The capital city of Quang Ninh Province is Halong City which overlooks the famed Halong Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, 140km from Hanoi.

The terrain of Quang Ninh is higher to the north-east and lower to the southwest with mountain peaks from over 1,000 to over 1,500m above sea level. There are low mountains and hills between the coastline and the western mountain ranges.

Apart from the inland, Quang Ninh has 2,078 islands and islets of the 2,779 islands of Vietnam. There are islands inhabited by human beings but most are karstic mountains.

There are several rivers in Quang Ninh all of which are short and with steep incline. Most rivers flow from the northwest to the southeast discharging the water into the East Vietnam Sea.

Quang Ninh has a tropical monsoon climate. The summer from May through July is humid and with torrential rains; the winter is from November through February, dry and cold. The temperatures range from below 10oC to over 38oC.

In between the summer and winter, there are spring and autumn with less rain and pleasant temperatures (20-25oC). While autumn from August to mid November is beautiful with pleasant sunshine and temperatures which is supposed to be the best time visiting Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay; it is also the typhoon season. There are about fewer than 10 tropical storms and typhoons that hit Vietnam each year and most of them affect directly Quang Ninh. The typhoons often bring about rains for 2 days to a week. Cruises on Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay are halted for 1 or 2 days per each typhoon.

The ethnic groups in Quang Ninh include: the Kinh (Viet, 89.23%), Dao (4.45%), Hoa (Chinese, 0.43%), San Diu (1.8%), San Chi (1.11%)...

Tourist attractions and what to see in Quang Ninh

Quang Ninh is home to myriads tourist attractions, but since Halong Bay is too highlighted, others are overlooked by the foreign travellers to Vietnam. Still, many Vietnamese tourists make yearly visits to other tourist highlights of the province including:

- Tra Co Beach (near the Chinese border) with fine sand and clear water.
- Bai Tu Long Bay with Quang Lan and Minh Chau Islands, Co To Island… with pristine sandy beaches and fresh seafood.

There are decent hotels in most towns of the province of Quang Ninh. Luxury hotels and resorts, fine-dining restaurants are available in Halong City and on Tuan Chau Island only. There are some choices of hotels and resorts in Bai Tu Long Bay area, but of basic facilities. How to get to Quang Ninh & how to get around
Halong City is 140km from Hanoi and it takes 2 hours to get to Halong Bay from Hanoi via the new highway. The trip via the old route takes 3-4 hours. With the new airport at Van Don, then Quang Ninh can be conveniently accessible by air from different cities in Vietnam.

By railway: There is a rail track between Hanoi and Halong Bay and the train trip takes 6 hours. The train service is off and on as the demand is little.
