Thai Binh is located to the south of the Red River Delta. The province is bordered to the north by Hai Duong and Hung Yen, to the north-east by Hai Phong, to the east by the East Vietnam Sea, to the south and south-west by Nam Dinh, to the west by Ha Nam.

Thai Binh is an agricultural province supplying a big portion of rice to the northern region of Vietnam. There are gas reserves, oil reserves off the shore of Thai Binh, and coal mines in Thai Binh some of which have been extracted/mined and used for local industries.

Geography

The terrain of Thai Binh is flat without mountains and with altitude 1-3m above sea level. It is higher in the north-west and lower to the south-east. Thai Binh has been a part of the river basins and the land has been formed by deposition of sediments from the rivers.

The big rivers in Thai Binh includes: The Red River to the south, Luoc River to the north, the Hoa and Thai Binh Rivers to the north-east, the Diem Ho and Tra Ly in the middle. While the Luoc River flows from west to east; all the other rivers flow from north-west to south-east. There are small rivers in Thai Binh: Tien Hung, Sa Lung, Quynh Coi, Dai Nam, Thuyen Quan, He, Cu Lam, Bung, Bach, Kien Giang, Nguyen Lam, Duc Duong, Lan, Long Hau….

The Luoc River forms the borderline between Thai Binh and Hung Yen and Hai Duong to the north. The Hoa River and Thai Binh River separates Thai Binh and Hai Phong to the north-east. The Red River separates Thai Binh from Ha Nam and Nam Dinh to the west, south west and south.

The province has 50km of coastline with sand dunes still being created nowadays. The beaches are not so good for developing tourism for the present.

The climate of Thai Binh is monsoon tropic with temperatures ranging from below 10oC to above 38oC. The annual rainfall is 1,700-2,200 and the average humidity is 80-90%. There are typhoons from July through October which could be devastating.

1/ The Seaside and the beaches

While the sea and the beaches at Thai Binh are not likely to turn into popular tourist spots in the short terms, they may make for relaxing holidays in fresh air. The seafood is dirt cheap here. The beaches and seaside spots you may like to visit while in Thai Binh:

- Dong Chau Beach (Tien Hai District): 35km east of Thai Binh City.

- Con Vanh Beach (Tien Hai District): 33km east of Thai Binh City.

- Con Den Beach (Thai Thuy District): 40km east of Thai Binh City.

2/ Keo Pagoda

Keo Pagoda built in the 17th century and is one of the most beautiful Buddhist pagodas in Vietnam with ancient architecture.

3/ Handicraft villages

In Thai Binh, there are several handicraft villages producing a wide range of products from sleeping mats, silver wares, textile, … These villages can be visited on bicycle tours which travel through the countryside of Thai Binh.

There are more industrial zones and more big factories in Thai Binh nowadays, there is room for business travel in the time to come. Still, luxury travel is not yet available in Thai Binh at the moment.

There are not many travel agencies and tour operators in Thai Binh as demands are slim. Local tourists tend to use service by tour companies either in Hai Phong or Hanoi for their overseas trips and for holidays in other destinations in Vietnam.

Where to Stay, Hotels in Thai Binh

There are several hotels in Thai Binh City and in towns in the province which range from 1 or 4-star luxury hotels. While most find it more interesting staying in Hai Phong, Halong Bay or Ninh Binh, staying overnight in Thai Binh for a night may make your trip a different experience.

How to travel to Thai Binh & Getting there and away

Thai Binh is 100km south-east of Hanoi, 20km east of Nam Dinh, 50km north-east of Ninh Binh. The roads are all in excellent conditions nowadays.
