Geography

Tra Vinh, Vinh Long and a part of Dong Thap Province comprise an island surrounding by tributaries (Tien and Hau Rivers) of the Mekong River. The terrain of Tra Vinh is basically flat with land for agriculture and forestry. The rugged 65km coastline of Tra Vinh is home mostly to mangrove forest and 10km of sandy beach (Ba Dong Beach).

Climate

The climate of Tra Vinh is tropical with 2 seasons per year: rainy season from May-October and the dry season for the rest of the year. The average temperature is 26-27oC, average humidity is 83-85% and the annual rainfall is 1,500mm. There are rarely typhoons or storms in Tra Vinh.

People and Population

Tra Vinh Province's population is composed of the Kinh, the Hoa and the Khmer of which the Khmer accounts for 30%. And there is clearly a blend of culture in Tra Vinh.

Tourist Attractions, What to see in Tra Vinh

The natural beauties of Tra Vinh include the sea, the Mekong River, the mangrove forests. The cultural attractions of Tra Vinh include 142 pagodas and temples of the Kinh, the Hoa and the Khmer Communities and the blended culture of different ethnic groups.

1/ Ba Dong Beach

The beach is 55km from Tra Vinh City.

2/ Nodol Pagoda (Stork Pagoda):

The pagoda is 40km south of Tra Vinh Town. This is the home of several hundreds of storks which earn the pagoda another name the Stork Pagoda.

3/ Hang Pagoda:

The Hang or Tunnel Pagoda is 5km from Tra Vinh Town, the gate is like a tunnel and the pagoda compound is with dense forest of trees of hundred years old. The pagoda is also a stork sanctuary.

4/ Ao Ba Om

This is a square-shape lake surrounded by a small wood, 7km from Tra Vinh Town. The square lake offers lotus flowers and hundred-years-old timber trees. There are the Ang Pagoda, a Khmer Museum nearby. The total area is 84 hectares and covered with big timber trees.

5/ Phuoc Minh Cung (Chua Ong)

This is a temple dedicated to Quan Cong with Chinese architecture.

6/ Cau Ke Ancient House (Huynh Ky Ancient House)

The house is in Cau Ke Town, Cau Ke District, 30km from Tra Vinh City. The house has a nice French architecture at the beginning of the 20th century.

7/ Con Tau (at Truong Long Hoa Commune, Duyen Hai District, 60km from Tra Vinh City)

The site was a port where war materials were received after being transported from North Vietnam via the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea.

1/ Off-the-beaten Track Cultural Adventure Tours, Nature Tours, Bicycle Tours

Tra Vinh has always been off the tourist track and your trip through Tra Vinh is more likely without encountering other tourists. It is recommended you spend 1-3 days to take in all attractions in Tra Vinh: the attractions in Tra Vinh City should take at least 1 day, and 1 day for the coastline and the beach.

2/ Luxury Travel, Family Holidays

Tra Vinh is not a great place for family holidays, nor is it a kid-friendly place. Luxury travel services and kid-oriented travel services are not yet available in the province.

Getting there and away

Tra Vinh is 130km from Ho Chi Minh City and 100km from Can Tho. There are bridges across the rivers nowadays that you don't have to wait for ferries as earlier which makes transport to and from Tra Vinh very convenient.
