Hoang A Tuong Residence, Bac Ha

The former residence of Hoang A Tuong in Bac Ha (Lao Cai) was built from 1914-1921. This was a residence and a working place of the father-son Hoang Yen Tchao and Hoang A Tuong who were chiefs of Bac Ha back that time. The family was of Tay origin but some may still refer to the residence as the Hmong King’s Residence in Bac Ha. The residence has a mixed architecture of French and Chinese styles.

 The Chinese style is showed in the landscape designing of the complex taking in the yin-yang philosophy and Chinese fengshui and in the yin-yang roof tiles. The French style can be found in the architecture of the buildings, doors, ports, decorative motifs,...

The residence stretches on a piece of land of 10,000m2 with the surrounding walls have several embrasures. The site on a low hill was picked by a reputed geomancer. The whole complex faces east leaning against another hill in the back and overlooking a stream in the front.

There are 36 rooms in the residence which were for the family as well as for employees of the administrative system in Bac Ha.

The Hoang Family was supported by the French colonialists and they were authorized the monopoly of doing business in opium, salts,… They owned huge agricultural land in the area and hired several peasants back then.
