The First Indochina War or Franco - Viet Minh War was a military encounter between France and the Viet Minh from 19-December-1946 to 21-July-1954.
The war broke out when Ho Chi Minh declared a resistance war against the French in the evening of 19-December-1946 which was immediately followed by the Viet Minh attacks on different French positions in Hanoi and other cities in Vietnam.

The First Indochina War was brought to an end when different parties signed the Geneva Accord on 21-July-1954. The signing of the Geneva accord followed major French military defeats at Dien Bien Phu (Battle of Dien Bien Phu) and at the Mang Yang Pass (Battle of Mang Yang Pass).
