Hai Phong, the 3rd biggest city in Vietnam, is located to the North-East of the country. From the 19th century, Hai Phong has always been known for Hai Phong Harbor, one of the biggest commercial ports in Vietnam. Thanks to the strategic position, Hai Phong has always been important to Vietnam’s defense and economy.

Hai Phong is bordered to the north and north-east by Quang Ninh, to the north-west and west by Hai Duong, to the south by Thai Binh and to the east by the East Vietnam Sea.

Hai Phong overlooks the Gulf of Tonkin. Apart from the inland, Hai Phong’s territory also includes the archipelago of Cat Ba which is in the south-west of Halong Bay, and Bach Long Vi Island which is far in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Hai Phong has a very complicated river network. The general direction of the rivers is to flow from the north-west to the south-east.
 - To the north-east of Hai Phong there are Da Bac – Bach Dang River (32km) discharging its water via Nam Trieu Estuary. This river is a tributary of the Kinh Mon – Kinh Thay River.

 - The Cam River (30km) is a tributary of the Kinh Mon – Kinh Thay River flowing just north of Hai Phong City discharging its water via Cam Estuary

 - The Lach Tray River (45km) is a tributary of the Kinh Mon - Kinh Thay River flowing through the middle of Hai Phong and discharging its water into the sea at Lach Tray Estuary.

 - To the south-west of Hai Phong there are the Van Uc (35km), Thai Binh and Hoa Rivers which all belong to the Thai Binh River System.

Hai Phong has a tropical monsoon climate which is similar to most of Vietnam. There are 4 seasons per year and the rainy time with typhoons is from June through October. The temperature range is from below 10oC to above 40oC. The annual average rainfall is 1,600mm-1,800mm. The average humidity is 86%.

The terrain of Hai Phong includes: mountainous, flat plains and river basins. Hai Phong is a part of the Thai Binh River Delta in northern Vietnam. There are two groups of mountains in Hai Phong both of which stretch from north-west to south-east:
 - One group includes mountains in the middle of Hai Phong’s territory stretching from An Lao District to Do Son Peninsula.
 - Another group includes limestone mountains around An Son and Nui Deo in Thuy Nguyen District.

The road system in Hai Phong is in great conditions with several bridges spanning the rivers. And there are several rivers in the province which make transport by land and by waterways within the province and between Hai Phong and other provinces very convenient.

Tourist attractions and what to see in Hai Phong
1/Cat Ba Island is located in the beautiful area south of Halong Bay. There are several karst islands around Cat Ba that can offer boat tours and kayaking tours for a couple of days. Cat Ba National Park located on Cat Ba Island offers ecotours and trekking tours for 1 day.

2/Do Son with 3 sandy beaches is 20km from Hai Phong City which offer relaxing beach and seaside holidays.

3/Bach Long Vi Island is an offshore island in the Gulf of Tonkin. There are no regular tours to this island just yet.

4/Hai Phong City is charming with French colonial architecture and flower stalls by leafy streets.

5/Du Hang Pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda with lovely architecture and zen atmosphere.

There is a wide range of accommodations from guest houses, basic hotels to luxury hotels and beach resorts (4*) Hai Phong City and on Cat Ba Island. Don Son is being turned into a big R&R center in northern Vietnam soon.

Getting there and away
By road
Hai Phong is 100km from Hanoi and there are two roads between these 2 cities: regular road and express one. The trip by road takes 1-2 hours depending on the routes you take.

By air
There are daily flights between Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Da Nang, Da Lat, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc Island.

By railway
There are daily train between Hanoi and Hai Phong City which takes about 2 hours.
