Ban Keo Hill, which included Anne-Marie 1,2,3,4 strong-points, protected the French Dien Bien Phu Hedgehog from the northwest. Anne-Marie 1,2 are on a hill called Ban Keo in Vietnamese, and the other two are on paddy fields right on the northern edge of the Muong Thanh Airfield.

The French Force at Anne-Marie was the 3rd Thai Battalion who just arrived at Dien Bien Phu from Lai Chau and who had shown good fighting capability during the Battle of Na San. Besides, there was a platoon of legionnaires from 2e CMMLE (2e Compagnie Mixte de Mortiers de la Légion Étrangère du 5e Régiment Étranger d'Infanterie).

17-March-1954 Anne-Marie 1,2 on the Ban Keo Hill fell into the Viet Minh’s force without a bullet fired. The 3rd Thai Battalion had a mass desertion upon seeing the aftermath of the battles at Beatrice and Gabrielle. Anne-Marie 3, 4 were renamed to Huguette 6, 7 respectively.
