A1 Hill (Eliane 2) belonged to the Eliane Group protecting the French Hedgehog at Dien Bien Phu from the east.

Eliane 2 was located 1.1km slightly to the southeast of the French Commander Post. The distance between two positions was about 700-800m via a beeline. A1 Hill was of vital importance to the protection of the French Commander Post (PC) from the east. The moment that the Viet Minh controlled A1, the PC fate was decided.

The French had the most elite force on A1 and the Viet Minh did their best to eliminate the position. The Viet Minh managed to capture A1 in the morning of 7-May-1954 and the PC fell soon later in the same day.
