The Son Tay Citadel was built in 1822 under King Ming Mang. The citadel is surrounded by walls with the total perimeter of 1306.8m and moats with the total perimeter of 1729m. The walls were 4.4m with gates open to the North, South, East, West. The Son Tay Citadel is in Son Tay City, 40km west of Hanoi. 

The Son Tay Citadel was the site of major battles between the French and the Vietnamese and Black Flag's Army in the 19th century. The citadel was overtaken by the French in 1884 after defeating the defenders.
