Country: Vietnam

March is spring in the North of Vietnam, dry season in the Central Region of Vietnam, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and in the South of Vietnam. March is one of the best time to visit Vietnam for the weather, as there is least amount of rainfall, pleasant temperatures most of the country.

In fact, March is the peak time for tourism in Vietnam meaning prices for tourist services tend to be higher in March. Nowadays as tourist infrastructures have improved dramatically compared to earlier that lack of services does not occur that often. So if you look for nice weather, consider a trip to Vietnam in March; else if you like to be far from the crowds, you may take your vacation in Vietnam at another time of the year.

Vietnam Weather in March 2019 was more of the norm with the exception that the temperatures were quite high some days in Quang Binh (Central Region of Vietnam) and in South Vietnam (Saigon – Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Tay Ninh Province). There was a serious lack of fresh water for agriculture in the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta. Rivers in the Mekong Delta were encroached by sea water more than usual.

In the North of Vietnam there were 4 spells of cool wind each 5-7 day intervals which kept the temperatures in the North between 12-30oC: it was cold during and right after each arrival of the cold wind and it got warmer a bit until a renewed spell of cold wind again. The cold wind mostly influenced the Northeast (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Ba Be National Park…) and the lowlands (Halong Bay, Hanoi, Ninh Binh…). Travelers to the Northeast and the lowlands had some days with light rains which didn’t require even rain coats, just damp air and hazy weather.

The Northwest of Vietnam was mostly sunny without much influence of the cool wind and the regional temperatures were 17-35oC. The provinces to the extreme northwest including Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau had higher temperatures than the rest (Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai). It was great to have tours in the Northwest be it sightseeing, trekking or mountain climbing, … or other forms of adventure. Tourists to the Northwest in March this year had great weather most of the time. Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and Moc Chau Plateau experienced several days with perfect weather in March: sunny and pleasant (10-20oC).

In the Central Region (Central Coast) of Vietnam, except for Quang Binh, the other provinces enjoyed mostly sunny weather with pleasant temperatures of 22-35oC. This type of weather was perfect for sun-worshiping on the several beaches in the Central Coast like Lang Co, Da Nang, Hoi An, Sa Huynh, Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Phan Thiet and Mui Ne Beaches… Those who went to Phong Nha National Park (in Quang Binh) had some hot days an definitely needed some relaxing time on the Nhat Le Beach (Quang Binh).

The Central Highlands were too dry, pleasant temperatures. Da Lat had a great time with sunny days and beautiful temperatures (13-27oC).

The South of Vietnam got some very hot days with temperatures in Saigon and the Mekong Delta (Can Tho and Ca Mau) reaching 37-38oC. Tay Ninh constantly had 36-37oC temperatures. That was unusual. But those who went to the beaches and islands for holidays, you were lucky to have a great time. Long Hai, Vung Tau Beaches, Phu Quoc Island and Con Dao Islands… all did have great weather with temperatures of 23-28oC mostly and with sunshine everyday. So, it was hot in the cities but perfect to go to the beaches and islands in South Vietnam in March 2019.
