Country: Vietnam

April is spring in the North of Vietnam, the dry and warm season in the Central Coast, the dry and warm season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.

What helps to shape up the climate, weather patterns in Vietnam in April?

- The sun moving further northwards in the northern hemisphere heating up the vast plains to the west and northwest of Vietnam (meaning Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Yunnan in China). High temperature (low pressure) air troughs are formed in the air over the heated regions.
- The blow of the Northeasterly Monsoon, Easterly Wind and Southeasterly Wind in the North of Vietnam.
- The influence of the Northeasterly Monsoon in the part of Central Coast that is to the north of the Hai Van Pass.
- The influence of the foehn wind (Southwesterly Wind) in the Central Coast and the extreme Northwest of Vietnam.
- The influence of the hot air troughs to the extreme Northwest of Vietnam, parts of the Central Highlands of Vietnam and the South of Vietnam.

How the winds influence the weather and climate in Vietnam in April?
- Northeasterly Monsoon which is just weak and just enough to make mildly cool or pleasant temperatures in the North of Vietnam. The wind may cause drizzles for the first couple of days in the North. The wind may be strong enough to have influence in the Central Coast (mostly north of Hue) which may cause sudden rain or t-storms in the region for the first couple of days.

- The Easterly Wind or Southeasterly Wind which is humid and which may be blowing at the same time when the North is under the influence of the Northeasterly Monsoon. When these two winds blow at the same time, the North (mostly the Northeast and the lowlands) often has fog and damp air, even moisture indoors.

Most of North Vietnam enjoys fairly dry weather in April. Some places in the North may experience damp weather and fog at the beginning of the month, but often it is dry and cheery with some lovely sunshine. The temperatures are normally chilly in the mountains and pleasant in the lowlands.
- The Southwesterly Wind (or Westerly Wind or Lao Wind or foehn wind): The wind comes from the Bengal Bay in the Indian Ocean blowing through the heated continent and becomes hot and dry when blowing through the Northwest of Vietnam, north of the Central Coast of Vietnam and north of the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
The extremely Northwest of Vietnam, North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, parts of the Central Highlands of Vietnam may have a few days with hot temperatures reaching 35-37oC.

Besides, the high temperatures in parts of the Central Highlands and most of South Vietnam in April are attributed to thermal air troughs (hot air troughs) which are often formed to the northwest of these regions.
