The Kon Ka Kinh National Park is 65km northeast of Pleiku City in Gia Lai Province, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The name of the national park is after the name of the highest mountain peak: the Kon Ka Kinh Peak, 1,748m above sea level.
The total area is 41,913.78 ha on averaged altitudes of 1,200-1,500m above sea level. There are two seasons: rainy season from May to November, dry season from December through April. The averaged annual rainfalls are 2,000-2,500mm.
There are three main river system running through the national park: Ba River, Dak Pne River, and A Yun River.
The national park is located to the east of the Truong Son Mountain Range, or the windward side of the mountain which makes it receive a large annual rainfall and hence lush forest.
The forest type at Kon Ka Kinh includes
- tropical rain forest on high altitudes and that on low altitudes,
- mixed evergreen forest of broad-leaf and needle-leaf one which makes it special in eco-diversity,
- bamboo forest,
- planted forest.
Kon Ka Kinh is home to 1,022 flora species, 556 fauna species.
The endemic species include:
- Mammals: Vượn má hung (hylobates), vooc vá chân xám (pygathrix nemaeus), hổ (panthera tigeris) mang trường sơn (muntiacus truongsonensis;
- Birds: khướu đầu đen (garulax milleti), khướu mỏ dài (jabouilleia danjoui) khướu Kon Ka Kinh (garulax konkakinhensis) và 4 loài đặc hữu cho việt nam và lào khướu đầu xám, trèo cây mỏ vàng, gà lôi vằn, thày chùa đít đỏ.
- Reptiles and Amphibians: thằn lằn buôn lưới (shpnenomorphus buonluoicus) là loài đặc hữu cho vùng nam trường sơn (Lào). Có 3 loài đặc hữu cho việt nam: thằn lằn đuôi đỏ, chàng sâp, ếch gai sần.
